Porcelain veneers, sometimes called Dental Veners and sometimes called dental porcelain laminates are really thin layers of materials which can improve the shape and the colour of your teeth. They are stuck onto the front (and soetimes back) of your teeth to change the colour, shape, size, and length.

There are 2 types of materials used - Composite and Porcelain. Porcelain veneers 

- resist stain better than composite veneers 

- mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth.

Indications for Dental Veneers

Veneers can be used to fix:

• Discoloured teeth e.g.  after root canal treatment; tetracycline stains,  or other causes
• Worn Teeth
• Chpped or broken teeth
• Uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth 
• Teeth with gaps between them 'diastemas'

What do getting Dental Veneers involve

Getting a dental veneer usually requires 2 trips to the dentist – one for one to shape the tooth and second to apply the veneers.

• Diagnosis and treatment planning. This first step involves your active participation. Explain to your dentist the result that you are trying to achieve. During this appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are appropriate for you and discuss what the procedure will involve and some of its limitations. He or she also may take X-rays and possibly make impressions of your mouth and teeth.
• Preparation. To prepare a tooth for a veneer, your dentist will remove about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, which is an amount nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface. Before trimming off the enamel, you and your dentist will decide the need for a local anesthetic to numb the area. Next, your dentist will make a model or impression of your tooth. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which in turn constructs your veneer. It usually takes 2-4 weeks for your dentist to receive the veneers back from the laboratory. For very unsightly teeth, temporary dental veneers can be placed.
• Bonding . Before the dental veneer is permanently cemented to your tooth, your dentist will temporarily place it on your tooth to examine its fit and color. He or she will repeatedly remove and trim the veneer as needed to achieve the proper fit; the veneer color can be adjusted with the shade of cement to be used. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched -- which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process. A special cement is applied to the veneer and the veneer is then placed on your tooth. Once properly position on the tooth, your dentist will apply a special light beam to the dental veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden or cure very quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating your bite and making any final adjustments in the veneer as necessary. Your dentist may ask you to return for a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks to check how your gums are responding to the presence of your veneer and to once again examine the veneer's placement.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening involves bleaching your teeth for a whiter and brighter smile. It is not guaranteed to make your teeth brilliant white, but will make your teeth a lighter shade then before.
It is recommended to have teeth whitening done by a professional at the dentist as they are registered to carry out this treatment. however if a dentist is unavailable then a dental hygienist or dental therapist are able to carry out such task as long as they are General Dental Council registered and on the prescription of the dentist.
You will have to visit the dentist a few times. Your first appointment at the dentist will involve taking impressions and making a mouth guard for your teeth. It will take one week for your mouth guard to be made at the lab. The second appointment involves trying the mouth guards in your mouth and making sure they fit comfortably. The dentist or professional person will show you how to apply the whitening gel in your mouth guards, the dentist will also advise you of how long to wear the mouth guards in your mouth and for how many weeks. this is normally for two/ four weeks and for  4 hours or some whitening gels can be left on for up to eight hours, which will shorten the process to one week.
In surgery teeth whitening is available at the dentist but can take up to 2 hours there is also laser whitening and can take up to hour and only some dentists offer this service.
We advise our patients at the dentist not to use DIY home whitening kits as they can carry many risks when used, we also advise our patients to not have teeth whitening done from a beauty salon as this again can carry out risks. DIY home kits and salon whitening will not have the same amount of peroxide that the teeth whitening kits at the dentist have.
Teeth whitening will not change the color of your fillings, crowns, dentures and veneers. Teeth whitening may cause some sensitivity to your teeth and it is advised to use sensitive toothpaste whilst under teeth whitening treatment, there is also a chance of burns to gums and some of the teeth whitening kits used at home can harm tooth enamel.
